Fall in the Venable Garden

written by Sarah Wayne

October is a month filled with change. Elementary school students frequently go outside to observe these sometimes-subtle changes to the world around them. In Kindergarten, students observe the changing leaves and temperatures. Older grades focus on plant life cycles and how they revolve around the seasons.

The echinacea seeds are nestled inside the spiny centers of the flower and require a different approach. After the seed heads were harvested by Isabel Smith’s 3rd grade class, Samantha Kayser’s 2nd grade class separated the seeds from the seed heads. By placing a few seed heads in a closed container and then shaking it, the seeds separate and can be collected.

Our 10th Annual Fall Harvest Festival!
article written by Shannon Gaffey

Fall is a season naturally inclined towards celebration: it’s a time of bounty in the gardens, high energy in our schools, and a collective sigh of relief when the heat of summer finally breaks. It’s a season of food and community, and the Fall Harvest Festival at Buford exemplifies all these things in one evening of community fun, food and relaxation. While the Festival takes place all in one evening, it is actually a month-long program that includes the Family and Consumer Science (FACS) Veggie Cook-Off Competition, PE, ESOL, and Garden Aide garden preparation, planting and repairs, AVID and Civics Pre-Festival Community Service, and the Festival itself.

The day of the Harvest Festival is full of excitement. To harness that energy, set up the school for the event, support students in staying for the Festival and meeting their Civics class requirement, City Schoolyard Garden staff and Buford teachers engage over 60 youth in two hours of community service all around the middle school.  This year, Civics and AVID students made garden signs for our elementary school gardens, shoveled, raked and mulched the nature trail through the woods beyond the playing field, moved tables, laid out table cloths, hung banners and signage, sidewalk chalked and cleaned up the campus, set up activities and games for the festival, and helped take care of every other conceivable detail required for such an event.  We are especially grateful to the CCS teachers who supervised community service projects and activities during the event.

Celebrating the CATEC Culinary Team!

During the Fall Harvest Festival this year, we were so lucky to partner up with the CATEC Culinary Arts team with their Food Truck converted School Bus.

This Food Bus was established from a grant that CATEC received in the 2017/18 school year. With the grant funds, they received a decommissioned old school bus, and with the help of many trades in the school (Building Trades, Electrical. Auto body, Automotive teams) they put together the Food Bus which is named “Technical Eats”. The Food Bus makes special appearances at selected events, like our Fall Harvest Festival and also is located at Whole Foods once a month where they serve delicious meals.  Students build not only their culinary skills but also their entrepreneurial skills including menu development, and promotion. The truck has brought the community Paninis, smoothies, salads, wraps and soups with all products and food donated from Whole Foods.

While at the Harvest Festival, they had a “Berry Cherry Smoothie,” and a delicious Fire-Roasted Tomato Bisque with a grilled cheese crouton.  CATEC graciously donated all of the food that came off of the bus that day.

CSG sends out a hearty thank you to each and every one of the individuals, businesses and foundations that support making youth garden connections.  We thrive with your partnerships. Thank you!

Farm to School Week & Healthy Schools Week 2019

Check out that lunch, above. This lunch is 100% LOCALLY SOURCED & FROM SCRATCH! It was served on Wednesday October 9th for Farm to School Week!

This year we had another wonderful Farm to School week full of great food and farm visits. Farm to School Week is a Virginia “program [that] promotes opportunities for schools, distributors and growers to work together to increase the volume of locally grown foods served in school cafeterias and dining halls at all levels of education.”

At City Schoolyard Garden and CCS we take it further to incorporate agricultural-based lessons and activities in the garden to connect the work that students do every day in their school gardens with the work of local farmers who work hard to supply the community food and agricultural resources. This year we had an extensive locally procured menu in the school cafeterias and continued to grow our Farm to School operations at the garden level through new exciting visits from farmers and animals.

Check out our BLOG POST to see everything that happened with some exciting pictures.

Thank you, farmers!

City Schoolyard Garden Partner Programs

At City Schoolyard Garden, youth well-being is the core of all we do. We believe young people thrive with the opportunity to engage in nature, discover through experience, build equity, lead and cultivate healthy living skills. CSG aims to create a healthy and equitable future – personally, in community and across systems and structures. We do this through City Schoolyard Garden programs, the Urban Agriculture Collective of Charlottesville farming and community market and the Charlottesville Food Justice Network advocacy and collaborations.
